So what's the research all about?

The research was published in the British Journal of Nutrition and funded by the Milk Development Council - click here for a synopsis of the results. The tests looked into the effectiveness of skimmed milk versus water and isotonic sports drinks to re-hydrate the body after exercise.

In the study healthy young volunteers were recruited and asked to work out in a warm room for a series of ten minute sessions on an exercise bike until they had lost enough sweat to become dehydrated. Each volunteer repeated the experiment on three additional occasions and was provided with a different drink each time. After each exercise the amount of sweat they lost was calculated.

The results indicated that milk may be superior at promoting recovery, specifically re-hydration, after exercise than the competitor products. So next time you're heading to the gym don't forget to pack a milk flask in your gym bag to ensure full post-workout recovery...
